Dearest Rachel –
I’ve got to admit, I really don’t know what to write to you about this morning. It’s been a day of a fair number of little things – just enough to keep me occupied – none of which strike me as particularly noteworthy. It’s just a little bit of everything and a whole lot of nothing. However, since I can’t guarantee that I’ll be able to tell you about today’s events until tomorrow (and I’ll get to that eventually), might as well go through what I can while I can still remember them. Hopefully, I’ve got enough time before Daniel wakes up and we have to head out for the last thing on this list.
The most ephemeral of these has to do with last night’s dreams; at least I think it was a dream. The subject of it is a real person – the governor of a nearby state, no less – who seems to equate profanity with manliness, and I was getting more than fed up with it. “You’re not fooling anyone!” I told him angrily, which is why I’m pretty sure it had to be a dream, because when would I get an audience with a fellow like that? Heck, when would I bother to visit his state in the first place? I hear they have a pretty great state fair, but that was over and done with a couple of weeks ago.
Last night’s dinner with Mom went well, if differently. It’s been established that Daniel’s problem with my schedule is as I’d guessed – he doesn’t like driving there separately, nor heading home on his own while I head off to church for my class. However, there happens to be a class on Biblical counseling. And while he’s taken such a class there before in the past, there’s nothing wrong with a refresher. In fact, I think you were still around when he was doing so, which might be sufficient proof that he needs to study it again. So now we’re back to car pooling.
Meanwhile, Mom’s schedule is such that she hadn’t been able to get anything put together, so I offered to pick something up. However, before I did, I thought I could get Daniel’s opinion as to what he might appreciate. Much to my surprise, he actually had an idea; one he’d proposed to her about a month and a half back, when I was down in Honduras (which, as you know, is why I’m taking this class, so this all ties together, apart from last night’s dream), but she’d already had meal plans for that day.
So last night saw us bringing Korean-style corn dogs and chicken over to her house, and apart from their being too much food – which, let’s face it, is standard operating procedure for dinner over there; we’re just trying to hold up our end of the tradition – things went pretty well. Daniel acknowledged that tteokbokki is a little too spicy, even for him, but otherwise, everything worked out great; and it had all been his idea.
I think I’ll set aside the class time for now, even though I’m short on words for you this morning, because it doesn’t have much to do with Daniel. Yes, I know that I already told you about my dream, but that’s different. He really didn’t tell me much about his class (which ran longer than mine, much to my surprise), so I haven’t much to relate about that to you.
So let’s move on to the last story of the day – and the one that belongs to today – that of his car. His cousin Will has changed jobs – or I guess more accurately, changed employers, since it’s basically the same job – so we’re going to be heading down to somewhere in the middle of DuPage county to look at cars for him. According to my sister, he’s found several different options that Daniel might be interested in, adding that it might be worthwhile to get financing and pay off the balance shortly thereafter, as he might get a few additional discounts on the price from the financing company. Boy, wouldn’t the folks leading my class be ticked about that!
Then again, we haven’t freed up any ready cash from his investment account to buy the thing outright, should we find one that he’d like to take home and replace your car with, so that might be a solid plan all the same. Oh, and don’t worry about that word ‘replacement’; we still intend to put your car away in the garage, rather than getting rid of it. It’ll be a long time, if ever, before that happens, honey; although it could probably benefit from a visit to the body shop before we do put it away for good.
In any event, that’s past and present for you; between yesterday afternoon and this morning, it looks like it’s been a day for Daniel, once I put it all together. Which may explain why I couldn’t figure out what to tell you about at first, since it really wasn’t my story, for the most part. I hope you’d be happy for him, and that you’d wish him well for what’s to come. Take care.
