Towel Critters

Dearest Rachel –

I probably should’ve known better. When I didn’t see one on my bed the first night when I came back to the room after dinner, I concluded that the cabin staff no longer folded towel animals. Either that, or they no longer did so for rooms that didn’t have kids in them who would be captivated by them, which actually might make some amount of sense. Adults don’t necessarily go for that kind of cutesy-poo stuff.

Then again, a cruise is never business travel (unless you’re one of the performers); you’re there to have fun, after all. And what’s more fun than these cute little towel plushies that the cabin staff puts together just to serve as a little ‘hi there!’ from them.

So I figure I might as well document the lot of them as I encounter them. Kind of a retelling of my visit to the fabric zoo, and all the towel critters I’ve seen here.

So the first one, on Sunday night, is unforgettable…

I may have hung out in my room too much on Monday, because I never saw anything then. But on Tuesday, I was greeted with this graceful beast:

It occurs to me that these are looking a bit like mugshots, what with there being a front and side shot. At least I’m not including numbers or other law enforcement information.

Besides, this second one looks suspiciously like a couple of creatures hanging out on the pool deck, by where you check out towels to drop off with after swimming:

Come to think of it, that guy in the front right looks a little familiar, too

Louis skipped out on Wednesday as well, probably because I spent a lot more time in my cabin than usual (between the late arrival in Aruba and my hanging out to connect with the study via Zoom, I wasn’t gone long enough to really do as much as he might have wanted to). But he certainly made up for it on Thursday, with this creation…

But then, he seemed to have run out of ideas. I know we’ve seen other foldings, but Louis didn’t do anything for Friday or Saturday, despite my hanging out in the Lounge until 8, and then watching a move topside until 9.

I really thought this letter was going to be longer than it is, but oh well, what can you do? Besides, he’s probably got his hands full with other people’s luggage tonight. As for me, the notice suggested that I keep buying with me, so that’s what I’m going to do. I’ll be heading out by 7:30 tomorrow morning anyway, and it’s only the backpack and the suitcase, so what harm?

And with that in mind, and knowing I’ll have to wake up fairly early in the morning, I might as well call it an early night. I’ll talk to you later.

Until then, keep an eye out for me, honey. Love you.

I am Rachel's husband. Was. I'm still trying to deal with it. I probably always will be.
