Leftoverture

The title just demands it, though, doesn’t it?

…and with that music, I have to include a shot from your beloved Supernatural.

Dearest Rachel –

You know full well that I’ve never been a fan of leftovers. Although it’s not the food per se – give me a half-full pizza box from Lou Malnati’s, and I’ll be happy for days – it’s more a question of the obligation to eat it within a certain amount of time; time in which I may not really have the desire to eat that particular dish again.

Even something as tasty as McAlister’s lemonade winds up sitting around in the fridge for a week.

But some days, there isn’t that much choice. There’s plenty sitting in the refrigerator, and if I don’t do anything with it, it’ll go bad. Besides, I have to wait for Chompers to fall back asleep before I can go shower – I might as well do something more elaborate than just cereal and milk.

And he’s just lying there in the sunroom, waiting… for what, I don’t know.

Besides, you always told me that, during your Japanese honesty, breakfast was a little more than leftovers from a previous meal. So I guess this is going to be Japanese-Mexican style?

Anyway, given the fact that the other day I had far more filling than empanadas, I figure I might as well work on that. If nothing else, I have those taco shell pans that I mentioned last time.

I don’t think you can see the ‘as seen on TV’ advertisement on the box in this picture, but believe me, it’s there.

I probably should mention that I had no plans for this meal, and idea where the taco pans were, but as I was putting away a box of Ziploc bags under the oven, I found them, and figured, “well, why not?”

I have to confess, honey, I can’t bring myself to ‘goose’ the eggs like you used to do. I just don’t see the need to stick my finger in there and get every last molecule out of the eggshell
Seven minutes in the toaster oven can do wonders for making the tortilla keep its shape like this.
All I need to do is add the chorizo and veg…
…a generous helping of cheese…
…and top with a fried egg. And yes, I know it looks ugly when it’s over hard. Unlike you and Daniel, I just don’t like my eggs runny. Presentation is all well and good, but if you don’t like the taste of the final result, well… look, it may be art, but I wouldn’t recommend eating Van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night,’ either.
And as long as I’m committed to the ‘ugly-tasty’ route, why not add some more cheese on top?

And that’s pretty much breakfast. It’s a little more involved than what I usually have, but it accomplishes its purpose of clearing out most of the chorizo and veg combination.

It doesn’t, however, kill time while Chompers falls asleep. But since he is still awake, there’s no harm in letting him clean the dishes.

And I suppose we can celebrate any amount of progress, after all. Now, if I can only figure out whether Daniel wants anything for breakfast…

I am Rachel's husband. Was. I'm still trying to deal with it. I probably always will be.

  1. Hmmm. That sounds like a fun challenge – making a meal out of “Starry Night”. And give just about anyone a half-eaten box of Lou Maltani’s, and they could eat, satisfied and happy, for days.
